Do you remember any thing or a few things that were actually breath taking for a split second, or a few seconds? Three things came to my mind as I was pondering on this.
The first was during the summer of 1997. I was musky fishing with Grampy when he got a musky on. He told me right away he had on a fish, I quickly reeled in my plug and set the fishing rod down. As I looked in the water, the musky was swimming out from under the boat. His gills were flaring for a second or two, and then he gave a massive head shake and a little water was flying. The second he came out from under the boat, when I could not even see his whole body yet, but those gills were flaring, was an unbelievable sight. I had never seen that before. As a side note, that was the first musky I helped net. I was a little clumsy and awkward about it because I didn't know for sure what I was doing, did not want to be the one responsible for losing Dad's fish and I was seven months pregnant with Trucker!
The next thing that came to my mind that was breath taking was on a sunny morning in Badlands National Park in June '05. We had already hiked around the Badlands the day before and decided to rent one of their cabins right in the park. The King and I got up before sunrise, he brewed himself a cup of coffee and we went out for another little hike. It was only the King and I for as far as you could see. No other people, the only noise was the wind howling; then the sun came up the rest of the way. That is one of my favorite vacation memories; neither one of us talked, just sat and watched the sun come up together. I can still smell his coffee, if I think about it!
The next thing that came to my mind as breath taking was also during our family vacation. This time was at Grand Sable Dunes in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan last summer. The Princess and I were hiking along the sand dunes and a storm was moving in over Lake Superior. When we got to the top of one of the Dunes, you could see Lake Superior. We were up high on one of the Dunes looking down over the lake. You could see out to where the lake met the dark sky. That was quite a view in itself, but then the storm let loose with a few good cracks of lightning over the lake. What a sight that was.
While all of those stand out in my memory, I don't think they are any thing compared to Psalm 66:5-6 Take a good look at God's wonders-they'll take your breath away. He converted sea to dry land; travelers crossed the river on foot. Now isn't that cause for a song?
Could you imagine seeing a lake or even a mud puddle open up and turn dry so you could walk over it? Better yet, see a sea open up in front of you? We have all seen things that are etched in our memories forever, but that had to be tops for those people!
