A Raccoon Tail or A Raccoon Tale

Yesterday afternoon Trucker had to mow a lawn. While he was mowing I was sitting in the van enjoying the breeze off the lake. I noticed some movement in one of the trees and kept watching to see what was moving. It was a raccoon that lived in the tree with three or four babies. I know I saw three babies come out of the tree, but could not tell if I was seeing a fourth baby or the tail of one of the first babies. Three babies made it out of the hole in the tree after Mama raccoon came out, but she chased them back in. As soon as she had all three babies back in their home, one of them would come out some other hole! I watched them play that game for a few minutes, then Trucker was done mowing. I showed the raccoons to him and we both watched them for a little while. He took my cell phone and started moving slowly closer to get a picture. Every time Mama looked at him, he stopped moving. The third time she spotted him, she knew something was not right and would not move for a long time. When she was watching him, two of the babies started to come back out one of the holes. Trucker did not hear Mama make any noises, but she communicated with the babies some how because they scurried back into the tree and never came out again. Trucker got a few pictures, then came back to the van and left her alone. A few minutes after he came back to the van, Mama came down the tree the rest of the way and headed down the hill to the lake.
You don't see raccoons during the day very often. I wondered if raccoon babies are like our human babies. When they are real young, they do not know a schedule yet; when they are hungry they wake up crying and want food. Maybe when they get a little older they will know they are supposed to sleep all day and roam around and get into our garbage at night!
