Several years ago I recieved a book from my Secret Sister at church called The Final Week of Jesus by Max Lucado. It is an excellent devotional to prepare you for Easter. The readings begin with the Friday before Good Friday, which would be April 3rd this year. The book is excerpts of another book which is written by Max Lucado, And the Angels Were Silent. I read through the book the year she gave it to me, probably in the mid '90's and again around 2000 or 2002. I decided to pull the book off of the shelf and read it again this year. If you are looking for some reading to give you a better idea of what Jesus went through his final week, I strongly recommend this book. I would imagine that And the Angels Were Silent would be good reading, too, but have never read it so cannot say for sure!
I have been reading in the book of Deuteronomy for a few days now. This Old Testament book is Moses speaking to the People of Israel before they enter the Promised Land. Chapter 28 speaks about the benefits of obeying God and the results of not obeying God. Interesting reading, but very graphic. God will hit you hard with the boils of Egypt, hemorrhoids, scabs and an incurable itch. He'll make you go crazy and blind and senile. You'll grope around in the middle of the day like a blind person feeling his way through a lifetime of darkness; you'll never get to where you're going. Not a day will go by that you're not abused and robbed. And no one is going to help you.
~ Deuteronomy 28:27 - 29 The Message Next time you are tempted to sin, or disobey, think on these words for a few seconds, it will help set you straight!
I'm also asking you to pray for my niece, Devin. She has been in and out of the hospital several times in the last two months with severe sore throats and a fever that comes and goes. The doctors have not been able to figure out what is wrong with her and keep prescribing different meds and sending her home. I got a call from my Mom today that Devin went back into the hospital and they had to do an emergency surgery on her throat to drain a sac filled with pus. Sorry, I know, more graphic reading. Her white blood count is real low and they don't know why that is either. The poor girl will be going through more uncomfortable tests tomorrow I think.
Praying for Devin, Candy. And thanks for the idea of reading something for Easter. I have just the book back home.
