Braces?

More girls from South Dakota that the Princess was able to spend some time with.

Jed Clampett, Sami and the Princess!

Last week Trucker had a dental appointment, this week it was the Princess's turn. The last several visits for the Princess has ended with the dentist recommending braces. The last two visits have ended with recommendations that Trucker get braces. I asked why he thought braces were needed. The dentist explained to me that the Princess has a cross bite; meaning that instead of her upper teeth coming down over her bottom teeth when her mouth is closed - the top front teeth sit evenly on the bottom front teeth. This can cause the teeth to rub together, wear off the enamel, which can lead to decay down the road.

The Trucker's teeth don't line up correctly either, I guess. The way his teeth line up does not allow for him to chew his food thoroughly, which could lead to stomach disorders down the road. This explanation kind of made me laugh. Not that I want him to have stomach disorders down the road, but I guess I was not expecting to hear that.

Has anyone else heard of these things? It seems to me almost all teenagers now wear braces. When I was growing up, I only can think of a few students who had braces. Do they want all young people to have braces now? Or is it really needed for our two? When I checked with our insurance company about what they cover and what the total cost of braces are; we would end up paying around $10,000. Yikes!

When January rolls around and our six month check up time is here again, I think we are going to see a different dentist. See if he says the same thing to us. We do not have $10,000 and neither of our kids want to go through the whole process of braces. When I look at my kids teeth they look fine to me, but then again I am their Mother, of course they look fine to me! Every thing about them looks perfect to me!

What are your thoughts on the braces thing? Did you or your kids have braces? Why were you told the braces were needed?

  1. I was told years ago that all three of my kids were reccommended for braces. I think they have beautiful teeth today some 20 years later. Our middle daughter had the same thing you are talking about and is the only one that I think maybe braces may have helped, but she still doesnt think so and she is 33. Our youngest daughter just went to the dentist a month or so ago and was told by the dentist that she must of worn braces when she was young because her teeth are so perfect. She said that was the second dentist that told her that and she was the one that was the most needy at about 10 years old. Personally I think I have heard more people who wore braces over the years have more problems with their teeth than those who didn't. I sorry but I think dentists are being hit the hardest by the economic crisis and people just can't afford to go so they are trying everyway possible to make money off the ones who do go. How many people have you ever heard of that come home from the dentist now adays that dont need a crown or root canal??? I got one and have been told for two years to get another one before my tooth starts cracking more. I told them to just keep me updated by xrays until I actually need the second one. So far so good. The dentist didnt like this plan tho-- keeps pushing for that $1500. Nothing says you cant get a second opinion from a dentist just like with a doctor, your talking alot of money same as some surgeries that require a second opinion. Well that is my opinion - HA. Also have you ever looked at Kevin Costner's teeth? He has such crooked teeth for an actor, but really who looks at his teeth? So this was my very very long opinion.

  2. Oh by the way someone came into the office so I got off track. I think your kids have beautiful teeth and if there was any chance that the braces might rot the teeth because it is hard to clean behind them, that would be worse than the biting problem. Also, like Costner a little imperfection never hurts and gives you a little more individuality.
