Over the weekend one of our neighbors celebrated her 95th birthday! I have known Mrs. M for close to twenty years and have always enjoyed talking with her. Any body that age has a ton of wisdom to share with us if we are willing to take the time to spend with them. Not only does she have the knowledge that 95 years will give you, but she has lived on the same piece of property since she was three years old! Her parents moved here when she was three, and she has been blessed to stay in the same spot the rest of her life. By the time she was married, her mother had already passed away, so her husband moved in with her and her Dad. They had four children and raised them all in the same home. At some time the original house burned down and they built a new one, and that is the house that she lives in with her son now. You know you are getting to be elderly when your retired child moves in with you! Mrs. M is so interesting to talk to about our area and our own little neighborhood, I think she knows more about our house than I do. She remembers when they brought electricity into our area! Until a few years ago she still had a huge garden that she did the majority of the work in.
She started her career as a one room school teacher in our town hall when she was a young woman. When the one room school house was closed, she started teaching in town, where she kept teaching until she was of retirement age. Writing about her now makes me think that I need to get back to her place and visit her again! There is still so much I could learn from her. Whenever I leave her house, I think of a million more questions that I should of asked her.
My step-sister, Sandy, also celebrated her birthday over the weekend. I don't know if I am supposed to disclose her age, though!
Happy birthday Mrs. M and Sandy. I hope you both had a great day!

Happy Birthday Mrs. M. Wow, 95 and still living in her own home. If only everyone could be so lucky!
ReplyDeleteYa know Bug, I was thinking (really) that you should consider the idea of writing a small book on your area. I think (again!) you'd do a good job of it. Maybe not a best seller, but I bet you'd find a local market. People are interested in the history around them. I know how you hate to talk to people but you could force yourself to visit with all the older people in your area. I think (good heavens all this thinking is making me tired!) you'd do a good job.
I am writing my book right here, Mom. I probably should spend more time talking to the older people in our neighborhood, though. You are right, it is a tough job, but someone has to keep them company! Besides, they make some yummy treats, too! So, when are you and Marv going to move into our neighborhood? That would give me a few more older people to visit with!!
